Spectrum’s Grimoire of Metaphysics is the compilation of all metaphysical effects currently employed in the Spectrum Universal Collaborative Storytelling System (aka the SUCS system), for use in your stories where such powers are appropriate. While Spectrum is designed to work with all genres, worlds, and paradigms, the mechanics governing metaphysics are consistent, irrespective of the source from which they emerge. To this end, the rules for metaphysics use a source-neutral vocabulary to reference characters’ use of metaphysical abilities, gear that defies our current understanding, creatures and entities that function outside the mundane worlds, arcane knowledge, divine intervention, eldritch horrors, mutations, superheroes, magic, psionic abilities, and any number of situations that only you can imagine.
Metaphysics can be woven into any of your stories, or not at all. An arcane spaghetti western could make for an interesting take on the settling of the American frontier. How different would the trenches of the Great War have been if either side had been channeling arcane and eldritch forces? And just because your paradigm allows for metaphysics doesn’t mean that it has to be ubiquitous. The metaphysics in your paradigm should be adjusted to best fit the world you’ve created. The scarcity, rarity, prevalence, accessibility, and indeed, the very origin of such fantastical powers are in your hands.
